The short version: fly to Vágar Airport (FAE) — the only airport — or take the Smyril Line car ferry from Denmark. Vágar is about a 50-minute drive from Tórshavn via a subsea tunnel.
By air
All flights to the Faroe Islands arrive at Vágar Airport (IATA: FAE) — the only international airport, on Vágar island, approximately 50 min drive from Tórshavn.
Four airlines fly to the Faroe Islands: Atlantic Airways (the national carrier, with the widest network), Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), Icelandair and Widerøe. Atlantic Airways flies year-round from Copenhagen (several times daily) and from cities such as Billund, Edinburgh, Bergen, Oslo, Paris and Reykjavík, with seasonal summer routes including London Gatwick, Barcelona and the Canary Islands. SAS flies from Copenhagen, Widerøe from Bergen, and Icelandair from Reykjavík — handy for connecting from North America. Most flights from Europe take under two hours.

atlanticairways.com →By sea — the car ferry
If you'd rather bring your own car (or fancy a scenic approach), Smyril Line's ferry Norröna sails weekly from Hirtshals in Denmark to Tórshavn, taking roughly 30–38 hours depending on season and carrying your vehicle. In summer the route also calls at Seyðisfjørður in Iceland, so it's possible to combine both countries on one crossing. Cabins and a car space should be booked well ahead for summer sailings.
From the airport to Tórshavn
Vágar Airport sits on the island of Vágar, about a 50-minute drive from Tórshavn through the tolled Vágatunnilin subsea tunnel. Most visitors pick up a rental car at the airport; there is also an airport coach (route 300) to Tórshavn and onward bus connections. If you're staying centrally, several hotels sit on the airport-bus route.
Entry note: the Faroe Islands are a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark but are not in the EU or the Schengen Area, so entry rules can differ from mainland Denmark. Check the current visa and passport requirements for your nationality before booking.
